In our first episode, Rick Veenstra, former Regional Executive and Leadership Development Catalyst for the Great Lakes Region of the RCA, talks about a difficult yet important leadership responsibility: releasing a staff member from an organization.
When Rick was a kid, his mother would say that he shouldn’t use the word “hate,” so he hesitated using the phrase, “I hate this.” However, the prospect of releasing a staff member from a team or a work environment is so distasteful to him, that all he could think to say was, “I hate this.” As a Christian leader, Rick doesn’t want to hurt anyone, and in this podcast he talks about the different ways in which this is difficult.
Rick is committed to the concept of a team – a team environment and team leadership- and believes that the primary responsibility of a senior leader is to develop a “cohesive leadership team.” Rick has accomplished this with assistance from instructive writings taken from Patrick Lencioni, Paul Brand, and Jim Collins.
